Tempe Well #20 Improvement

Project Owner

City of Tempe

Location

Tempe, AZ

Project Overview

The City of Tempe acquired a 1,600 gpm well from APS that had been previously used as an irrigation well. The existing well is located only a few feet away from buildings in the loading dock area of Tempe Market Place.

Valentine first assisted with the conceptual design which considered space and site requirements for the well equipping components (including noise enclosure), PFAS treatment, disinfection using 0.8% sodium hypochlorite and electrical and instrumentation.  In addition, connections to existing water and storm drain (for pump to waste) utilities in Rio Salado Parkway were determined.  Valentine evaluated several options for a single site or two separate sites to accommodate the equipment (well equipping+treatment) and fit into the available easement where the well is located.

Following the preferred option of a single site, Valentine prepared detailed design that provided the required well rig and operational access within the very small available easement, while also accounting for significant existing sloped grade across the well site. Valentine also assisted with coordination with the Tempe Community Development to address specific aesthetics of the new site walls/gates and coordinated with MCESD* for permitting review. In addition, SRP was coordinated with for the design of the new electrical transformer.

Currently, the hydrogeologist, which is LRE Water, has been rehabbing and retrofitting the irrigation well into a potable water well, which is almost complete. The well equipping construction is expected to begin in May 2023 with Valentine to provide construction management services to oversee construction administration and inspection for the project.
