Project Overview

This project included multiple wastewater system and park facility improvements at Lost Dutchman State Park, completed in coordination with the Arizona Department of Administration (ADOA) and Arizona State Parks. The work was federally funded with ARPA funds managed by ADOA.

 

The project included expansion of the park’s recreational vehicle (RV) dump station to add two additional lanes and an additional dump station with potable water access risers. The improvements were designed to improve traffic flow to both the new and existing RV dump stations and allow for vehicle queueing from multiple directions. The work included asphalt paving, connections to existing sewerlines and waterlines, extensive concrete work, grading, landscaping, and asphalt paving. During construction, a storm drain culvert was discovered to be in conflict with the new dump station improvements; the design was amended to extend the culvert and construct a new headwall to avoid the conflict.

 

Valentine also evaluated and rehabilitated the park’s wastewater treatment plant, including complete rehabilitation of the sludge holding tank through sandblasting and recoating, installation of an airlift pump for sludge decanting, and addition of coarse bubble diffusers for aeration. Additional improvements included replacement of the chlorine disinfection facilities, replacement of the plant’s flow equalization chamber pumps, and replacement of miscellaneous system piping with the intent of restoring the facility to its intended mode of operation.

 

The project further included design and construction administration for two sewage lift stations serving Lost Dutchman State Park. The existing Taj and Roadrunner Lift Stations were demolished and decommissioned and replaced with new package duplex pump stations consisting of wetwells and integral valve vaults. The lift stations collect flow from existing restrooms and campsites and convey flow to the park’s wastewater treatment plant. The lift stations were sized to accommodate existing flows as well as anticipated flows from two future park restrooms. The Roadrunner Lift Station includes two 42 gpm grinder pumps, and the Taj Lift Station includes two 55 gpm grinder pumps. A sequence of construction was prepared to allow the existing lift stations to remain online during construction.

 

Design included connections to gravity sewer inlets and sewer forcemains, with double sewer cleanouts near wetwell connections. Potable water supply was provided at each lift station by tying into the nearest waterline and installing a 1-1/2-inch copper water service with a backflow preventer and yard hydrant.

 

The project also included design of two new package CXT restrooms, complete with foundations, exterior utility sinks, drinking fountains, propane tanks for water heaters, restroom water supply lines, sewer discharge piping, and associated wastewater systems. One restroom was designed to connect to a nearby lift station, while the other included a new septic tank and leach field system. Although the restroom designs were completed, this work was not constructed as part of the current construction contract due to funding limitations.

 

Valentine addressed comments from ADOA’s third-party code compliance reviewer, Bureau Veritas, produced stamped conformed drawings, and completed permitting with ADEQ, including the Approval to Construct and Notice of Intent to Discharge permits. Valentine also assisted ADOA during the bid phase and performed construction administration under a job order contract (JOC) for fast-tracked construction.
